Tomorrow when the war began - second post

Since the last time I read the book it hasn’t happened so much, but here is a short summary:

Ellie and her friends drove in to their home town after they have been camping in the mountains. The city is totally black and there are no signs of anything living. They drove around in the city but all they saw was abandoned houses. After a while they decided to drive home to Ellie’s house and ask her parents what has happened. But when they came to Ellie’s house they got chocked. Ellie’s four dogs were lying in front of the house with blood around them. Only one of them was still living. They took the dog inside the house to give it some food and water. Then they felt an awful smell and realized that the refrigerator wasn’t working. They looked around and saw that nothing in the house worked. The electricity was gone and Ellie’s family had left the house. It was dark and empty.

During the week, when they were camping, it was Commemoration Day with a show in the city that Ellie’s family should have went to, but haven’t they been home by now? And why would they leave the dogs out, without even food or water? And why wasn’t there any electricity in the town?

The friends discussed some alternatives but concluded that they couldn’t decide what had happened until they have more evidence. So after seen Ellie’s house they went to the friends’ houses.

There the saw the same thing. Dark and empty houses. After a long talk they ended up in silence, then one of them said: “I think there might be a war.”  

Now Ellie and her friends have made up a plan for what to do next. The group has split up and Ellie and two friends are going down into the city to see if there is someone there. Maybe the solders have theirs station there or maybe the young friends’ families are locked in there. I have to read so I’ll see what happens! It’s so exciting and I really recommend the book.

I think the author want us to feel sorry for the young adults or… No, I actually don’t. It used to be so in many books but not in this. It just doesn’t feels like an ordinary book. I get the feeling that the author wants me to realize that even if you’re just a teenager you can take care of yourselves and other people in an emergency and make a difference. You can also take your own decision in hard situations like the friends in the book. Sometimes they have like small “fights” but they always understand that it doesn’t help so they apologize to each other. After that they can make the decision with help from everyone. That is something I think the author want to tell us. To cooperate.

Tomorrow when the war began - first post

This book is about Ellie and her friends how lives in Australia. They have known each other for a long time and are really good friends.

They decided to  go on a camping trip up in the mountains for a week. First they drove a Land Rover by themselves to the mountains but they couldn't drive all the way to the camp site, so they got to walk and climb the last part. The camping site were beside a creek and during the week they were swimming, cooked food together and just had fun.

One night when Ellie woke up she heard something strange. It was an artificial sound that came closer and closer. She looked up in the sky and there came a V-shaped line of jets raced over her head. After six V-shapes of jets the sound disappeared. Ellie didn't thought so much of the jets until it was time to go home from the trip.

On the way back home Ellie had a feeling that something was wrong. And she had right. When they drove in to their home town they saw a city in black. No signes of anything living.

That was a short summary of what has happened in the book so far. I like what I've read and how the book is written. It's exciting and I always want to keep reading to see what's happened next.

Something that I want to read about is how the group will work together in the future. It will be interesting to see if the group will start fighting or if they can stay together as a team all the way through the war.

I don't  know what's going to happen next but they have tried to contact their families and listened to the radio but nothing worked. So I've actually no idea what they are going to do next.

Something I've thought about when I've read is the language. The author John Marsden is from Australia and the book takes places in Australia, so the language is a little bit different compared to British English. At the beginning of the book it's an Aussie Glossary of some Australian words. It's very good because sometimes the words are totally different.
